A striking Art Deco bowl by Crown Devon Fieldings in the prunus design with brightly enamelled flowers outlined in gilt.
Simon Fielding established S. Fielding and Co in about 1870. It met financial difficulties and in 1878 or 1879 Fielding’s son Abraham joined the business, becoming the driving force behind its expansion and phenomenal later success. The Crown Devon backstamp started to appear on wares from around 1880, with the gilt backstamp used between around 1930 and 1965.
This bowl is probably by the designer Enoch Bolton. He joined Fielding in 1929, where he was responsible for the production of a huge range of striking Art Deco style wares that were released by the Devon Pottery in the 1930s.
The bowl is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips or rubbed gilding.
