Georgian Bur Yew tea caddy of octagonal form. Circa 1790.
Very attractive small tea caddy box in the less commonly seen octagonal shape. The lovely colour and and grain in the bur yew wood really attracts the eye.
A bur is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner. It is commonly found in the form of a rounded outgrowth on a tree trunk or branch that is filled with small knots from dormant buds. Wood with Burs can yield highly figured and attractive wood, prized for its look and rarity. Attractive burs are more common in some species of wood than others, such as in Walnut, Yew and Maple.
