Japanese Woodblock Print By Kikugawa Eizan (Japanese, 1787-1867)
Kikugawa Eizan learned painting in his father’s workshop and is believed to have studied with ukiyo-e artist Totoya Hokkei (1790–1850). He was strongly influenced by the great master Kitagawa Utamaro (c.1753–1806), specialising in beautiful women ( bijin-ga ). His work is characterised by gentle lines and lyricism. In the 1830s, he abandoned printmaking in favour of painting.
