Japanese Bronze Tsuba (Sword Guard) Decorated with Insects and Plants, Edo Period, 18th c

A tsuba is a sword guard and part of a sword mounting. It is mounted between the sword’s blade and grip to protect the user’s hands. This 18th Century example is chiseled with insects, incised flowers and mushrooms. Traces of the original gilding remain.
