Pair of Globe Wernicke three tier Oak bookcases. Both bookcases have leaded light glass fronts which lift up and then slide back to allow access to the interior. Each section of the bookcase has an innovative (patented 1905) scissor action mechanism to keep the up and over action of the fronts smooth and consistent. Labelled for "The Globe Wernicke Co Ltd, Office & Library Furnishers, London". circa 1920s
Due to their popularity with lawyers in the early 20th Century these bookcases are sometimes referred to as legal bookcases. Good working condition.
Although best known for their stackable bookcases, Globe Wernicke made a wide range of high end office and library furniture. The Globe-Wernicke company was formed in 1899 when the Cincinnati based Globe Files Company (est. in 1882) purchased the Minneapolis based Wernicke Company (est 1893 by Otto Wernicke). Globe Wernicke established factories in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France and Germany until it became Globe-Weis in 1963.
