A good size jug signed Schofield Penrith in chocolate brown with a white glaze interior. Small firing hairline to inside glaze which does not affect the body and minor fritting to the glaze at the rim. Otherwise, a well-shaped jug in good condition.
John Schofield started at the Wetheriggs Pottery, Penrith in Cumberland, which produced clay tiles and pipes from 1855. Production of pottery began in 1860 when John Schofield and Margaret Thorburn moved to the site from Stepney Bank Pottery in Newcastle. Schofield bought the company in 1913.
