George III mahogany pembroke table of small form. Two drawers at one end and faux drawers at the other. The oak framed drawers have rosewood handles plus boxwood and rosewood inlay banding. Turned legs with small brass casters. Sides lift up and are supported by wooden "elbows".
These small Pembroke tables are very versatile and popular for use as lamp and bedside tables. This one has good colour and patination with both drawers sliding smoothly.
A Pembroke table is a light, drop-leaf table designed for occasional use, probably deriving its name from Henry Herbert, 9th Earl of Pembroke (1693–1751), a noted amateur architect. The table has two drawers and flaps on either side that can be raised by brackets on hinges (known as “elbows”) to increase its size.
