A miniature of Marie Louise of Austria (1791-1847), Napoleonās second wife and Empress of the French 1810-1814, later Duchess of Parma, in white Empire-line dress with high frilled collar. Painted in watercolour on ivory after Jean-Baptiste Isabey in a contemporaneous frame.
The portrait is well painted and in good condition. Unfortunately, someone has painted the glass black on the inside of the brass surround which detracts from an otherwise fine, early 19th century portrait.
Jean-Baptiste Isabey (1767-1835) painted a number of these miniatures of the Empress. A pupil of Jacques-Louis David, he was miniature painter to Marie Antoinette and Napoleon Bonaparte and painted successive French rulers until his death in 1855.
