A hand painted set of six plates, one smaller plate and two cake stands with butterflies amongst wheat and flowers. Painted in the aesthetic style with Minton impress mark and a date mark of 1883. The backs have a model number B224 painted in red or black.
The plates and cake stands are beautifully painted on fine porcelain. In generally very good condition, there are one or two areas of minor rubbing. One of the plates has a tiny chip but there are no cracks. The painting on the first cake stands is worn and the stem of the second has an old repair.
The Aesthetic Movement in Britain (1860 – 1900) aimed to escape the ugliness and materialism of the Industrial Age, by focusing instead on producing art that was beautiful rather than having a deeper meaning – ‘Art for Art‘s sake‘.
