Famille-rose or "pink family" enamels were first introduced in China around the end of the 1720s. This new opaque palette could be fired at a lower temperature and appeared softer and gentler than earlier enamels, hence its other name ruan cai (soft colours). Later in the 18th century coloured backgrounds were introduced. Such brightly decorated wares were popular with the export markets and gradually overtook the market for blue and white porcelain.
