Victorian gothic revival X frame arm chair with drop in seat. Marked "Wilkinson & Son 8 Old Bond Street". Possibly after design by William Smee. Circa 1870.
Unusual chair in attractive age worn condition with new upholstered seat in striking Indian inspired fabric. From a top quality Victorian London furniture maker. Some historical restoration.
Wilkinson & Son was first established by Joshua Wilkinson as cabinet makers, upholsters, carpet sellers and a looking glass warehouse, in 1766 in the City of London. The firm was variously known as Wilkinson & Son, W C Wilkinson and occupied a number of different addresses in London. In 1825 they adopted the name Wilkinson & Sons and moved to 8 Old Bond Street where they stayed until 1909. The company was absorbed by arshall & Snellgrove in about 1918.
